O gender przed gender, czyli XVIII i XIX-wieczna refleksja na temat kulturowych i społecznych uwarunkowań kobiecości - Mary Wollstonecraft i John Stuart Mill

Abstract:

Although the word "gender” has been used only since 1970s, the debate about the question how much nature and culture is in the so-called natural femininity, could be found inthe beginning of feminist thought in 18th and 19th centuries. M. Wollstonecraft and J.S. Milluncover the normality of womanhood contemporary models and show that some of features,recognized as typical women's, are the result of girls and young women’s upbringing process. Both philosophers recognized also, that the model of unchanged feminine nature was used for supporting the patriarchal power. They proposed the new conception of education and socialization for girls, which gave them a chance to develop their individual abilities.  

Termin „gender” używany jest wprawdzie dopiero od lat 70-tych XX wieku, ale rozważania na temat tego, ile jest natury, a ile kultury w tak zwanej naturalnej kobiecości, znaleźć można już w początkach myśli feministycznej w XVIII i XIX wieku. M. Wollstonecraft i J.S. Mill demaskują naturalność ówczesnych wzorców kobiecości i pokazują, że niektóre z cech uważnych za typowo kobiece, to efekt procesu wychowania dziewcząt i młodych kobiet. Oboje zauważają również, że model niezmiennej kobiecej natury służy podtrzymywaniu władzy patriarchalnej. Dlatego też proponują nowe podejście do edukacji i socjalizacji dziewcząt, pozwalające na rozwijanie ich indywidualnych zdolności.
