Remarks on selected aspects of Polish foreign policy under the government of a right-wing coalition after the 2015 election

Subject and Keywords:

Poland’s foreign policy   the European Union   NATO   security   Intermarium   eastern policy

Abstract:

The coalition formed around the Law and Justice party emphasizes the area of home affairs and thus foreign policy is becoming one of the elements of this area. It happens through, for example, coming into conflict with the European Commission, leading countries of the EU and international institutions over the state of democracy in Poland. In this way Warsaw, which is going to lose Britain as its strategic partner due to Brexit, positions itself outside the international mainstream and joins weaker countries trying to compensate it with the concept of Intermarium. The challenges facing Poland both in the EU and in relations with difficult partners like Russia, paired with the new sovereignty paradigm in the foreign policy will cause Poland’s position in Europe to weaken. The return to the “glorious” days during the crisis, which elevated our country above its actual potential and abilities, will not be possible anymore.
