Title:

Biotechnology as a tool of biopower

Abstract:

The rapid progress in science, especially in the area of biotechnology, means that more and more often ethical concerns as well as ones about the level of humanity's interference into its own nature arise. The idea of transhumanism, which provides for perfecting humans using advanced technologies, seems to be a way to save the species from its civilizationally-eroded biological nature. Biotechnology is supposed to bring perfection to the human world, to be a Civitas Dei on earth, where the diseased and limited by biological imperfections human nature will be joined with technology allowing for the creation of human cyborgs. Control over biotechnology will be an obvious tool of political power, a biopower which - in the hands of governments and private corporations - will force upon societies its interpretation of life and how a life should be lived, and - what seems most probable - will achieve social segregation of which the Platonic ideal of state seems to be an archetype.
