• Abstract:
  
  
  The dissertation undertakes an issue of voluntary childlessness, which is an increasingly popular life option chosen by Poles. Not taking on a parental role by individuals is part of a wider mosaic of social changes (including family transformations) that have been going onfor several decades around the world, and in Poland generally began after the political transformation of 1989. The decision to live without children is influenced by processes described by: Z. Bauman, A. Giddens and U. Beck, such as self-realization, individualization and autonomization as well as consumerism. Individuals independently began to construct theiridentity and make decisions about their own biography. In addition, an introduction of the birth control pill in the 1960s gave women an opportunity to choose a life without children. Not taking on a role of parent is also related to an increasing duration of women's education and their "exit" from the home into the labor market. Moreover, nowadays costs associated with raising a ,,high-quality’’ child are enormous, so some individuals do not take on the task of parenthood.

  Rozprawa podjęła problematykę dobrowolnej bezdzietności, która jest coraz częściej wybieraną opcją życiową przez Polaków. Rezygnacja z potomstwa wpisuje się w szerszą mozaikę przemian społecznych (w tym przeobrażeń dotyczących rodziny), które mają miejsce od kilkudziesięciu lat na świecie, a w Polsce generalnie zaczęły się po transformacji ustrojowej z 1989 r. Na podjęcie decyzji o bezdzietności przez jednostki oddziałują procesy, które zostałyopisane między innymi przez: Z. Baumana, A. Giddensa i U. Becka, takie jak: samorealizacja, indywidualizacja i autonomizacja oraz konsumpcjonizm. Jednostka samodzielnie zaczęła konstruować swoją tożsamość i podejmować decyzje dotyczące własnej biografii. W dodatku wprowadzenie pigułki antykoncepcyjnej w latach sześćdziesiątych XX w. dało kobietommożliwość wyboru życia bez dzieci. Rezygnacja z potomstwa jest również związana z coraz dłuższym okresem kształcenia kobiet i ich ,,wyjściem’’ z domu na rynek pracy. Co więcej, koszty związane z wychowaniem dziecka ,,wysokiej jakości’’ są współcześnie bardzo wysokie, więc niektóre jednostki nie podejmują się zadania, jakim jest rodzicielstwo.
