The author of this article endeavors to conduct an analysis of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans-gender (LGBT) community in Japan. In the article, special attention is drawn to how the history of the community progressed, starting from the first historical mentions of non-heterosexual activities among the Japanese people. The author will provide specific examples of both historical events and literary evidence. Furthermore, the author will outline how the modern LGBT community in Japan came to be and why it happened relatively late in Japan’s history. Finally, the author will discuss the contemporary problems which the LGBT community is facing, such as same-sex marriage or gender reassignment
