Its distinctive area is separated from the surroundings of the Silesian Upland and the fertile Western Małopolska (Little Poland) by cuestas and big rivers valleys. The presence of caves and shelters, deeply indented rocky valleys and limestone monadnocks creates its exceptional relief, but this area is also characterized by a water scarcity and infertile soils. The region covers an area of 1.6 thousand km2 but in the Bronze Age before the beginning of 1st millennium BC it was almost uninhabited. The colonisation of the Polish Karst by the communities of the Lusatian culture took place in the Late Bronze Age and at the beginning of the Hallstatt Period. We are observing island-like microregions represented by small settlements often located on the monadnocks and traces of the penetration of caves and shelters. The paper presents the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland as a margin zone with its own independent economy which was adapted to the local environmental conditions.
