  Frg. 210 L.-P. of Sappho testifies to the fact that the poet mentioned the Eurasian plant smoketree (Cotinus coggygria Scopoli) in her poetry, calling it a Scythian wood. In this way, Sappho, who lived at the turn of the sixth century, is one of our oldest sources which mentions the ethnonym Scythians.
