  Suicide is a phenomenon that has been a serious social problem for many centuries. Death by suicide is a tragedy for relatives, friends, acquaintances, but also for the society. The phenomenon has a clear social dimension. Statistical data indicates a wide range of problems. Official statistics record around 6 000 suicide attempts that result in death every year in Poland. Despite innovative methods of detecting and treating mental disorders, the availability of specialist doctors, the development of science and a significant improvement in the economic situation of society, the percentage of people attempting to take their own lives is on the increase. Taking the multifactorial conditions of suicides into account, it should be noted that the phenomenon is the subject of research requiring constant updating. Contemporary attitude towards taking one's own life is the area of interest of many fields of science such as psychology, psychiatry, criminology, suicidology, but also that of religion. The views of religion on suicide are not uniform. The risk of self-destructive behaviours depends, among other things, on the religion professed by an individual and the behavioural patterns associated with it. The author of the text indicates the theoretical aspects of the phenomenon and the views of selected religions on suicidal behavior of individuals.

  Samobójstwo jest zjawiskiem stanowiącym od wielu stuleci poważny problem społeczny. Śmierć samobójcza stanowi tragedię dla bliskich, przyjaciół, znajomych, ale także społeczeństwa. Zjawisko ma bowiem wyraźnie społeczny wymiar. Dane statystyczne wskazują na szeroki zakres problemu. Oficjalne statystyki odnotowują rocznie na terenie kraju ok. 6 tysięcy zamachów samobójczych, które kończą się zgonem . Pomimo innowacyjnych metod wykrywania, a także leczenia zaburzeń psychicznych, dostępności do lekarzy specjalistów, rozwoju nauki oraz znacznej poprawy sytuacji ekonomicznej społeczeństwa, odsetek ludzi targających się na własne życie wzrasta. Biorąc pod uwagę wieloczynnikowe uwarunkowania samobójstw zaznaczyć należy, że zjawisko jest przedmiotem badań wymagających bieżącej aktualizacji. Współczesny stosunek do odebrania sobie życia jest obszarem zainteresowań wielu dziedzin nauki tj. psychologii, psychiatrii, kryminologii, suicydologii, a także religii. Poglądy religii na samobójstwo nie są jednolite. Ryzyko zachowań autodestrukcyjnych uzależnione jest między innymi od wyznawanej przez jednostkę religii i związanych z nią wzorców zachowań. Autorka tekstu wskazuje teoretyczne aspekty zjawiska oraz poglądy wybranych religii wobec zachowań samobójczych jednostek.
