Baca as master of the shepherd profession in Podhale: tradition and modernity

Abstract:

Shepherding ranks among the oldest activities in the history of mankind. Special traditions have developed in this area in the region of Karpaty. The social structure of the group carrying out this profession is reminiscent to that of a craft workshop. The article analyzes the process of preparing for carrying out of this profession. Special attention attention was paid to the role of Baca: a sort of master shepherd. You can read about the re-sponsibilities, skills, as well as role of Bacas in educating the next generation of shepherds. The article also touches on the transformation of vocational education in the field of shepherding that occurred in the second half of the 20th and early 21st century.
