Abstract:

The conflict that has lasted over 200 years in the Swiss canton Jura is one of the few examples that shows that ethnic disputes can be resolved in a peaceful and constructive way. Despite the strong influence of the separatist movements, the Swiss people managed to reasonably reconcile the interests of the followers of the concept the independent canton of Jura and the interests of the opponents of this idea, taking the interest of the state into consideration as well. Thanks to the unique cascade voting system, the Swiss enabled the local community to define themselves. This effected in establishing the canton of Jura, the twenty-sixth canton of the Swiss Confederation. This article presents the historical basis of the issue and then it shows the way that led the Swiss from a severe ethnic, religion and linguistic conflict to a consensus in the form of a new canton.
