Title:

Jesper Juul’s utopia of subjectivity

Subject and Keywords:

competence   crisis of school   Jesper Juul   responsibility   subjectivity

Abstract:

Utopia is driven by the idea that another world is possible, that its current state is not exhaust its creative potential. Thinking about education is filled with ideas of other, alternative societies, even though it would seem that nowadays the spirit of utopia is retreating. The aim of this paper is to introduce educational ideas of the Danish pedagogue and therapist Jesper Juul. His ideas are treated here as an alternative for current deficiencies in the sphere of education. Juul offers an interesting and comprehensive vision of the changes within the sphere of interpersonal relationships which would become a foundation for developing improved social relations. This project may be treated as utopian, because it assumes that developing multidimensional relationships beneficial for everyone (children, parents, schools, societies) 1) is related to moving beyond the current thinking patterns concerning education and social life towards the dominant categories of responsibility and competence, 2) requires the radical change in language and its use towards the unforced dialogue, and 3) involves the need for reshaping the wider social and economic context from control towards independent thinking.
