Abstract:

The phenomenon of corporatism was examined in the article through the prism of the process of political exchange concerning economic policy in which the government, representative trade unions and employers’ organizations participate. The aim of the article is to examine which type of corporatism (a classic, lean or illusory version) has prevailed in Hungary since 1990.There have been 4 patterns of behavior of the trade unions, employers’ organizations and consecutive governments confirming domination of illusory corporatism in Hungary. Firstly, the government broke agreements favored to the employees settled during the sessions of the corporatist institutions. Moreover, parties involved in the tripartite relations concluded some contracts that from the beginning were inconvenient for workers. Thirdly, trade unions have been not able to stop a systematic loss of their position at the company level since Hungary regained its sovereignty. Furthermore, since 2010 trade unions have been legitimizing neoliberal economic policy of the government that threatens the existence of trade unions in the long-term perspective.
