Abstract:

The National Commission of Education granted the Academy of Vilnius a new status and turned it into the Principal School of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In support to this reform the professors began transforming the school into a modern university. The professorial staff was diversified – clergymen, especially ex-Jesuits, as well as newly emerged secular professors. The man who was most dedicated to the transformation was Marcin Poczobut, a rector and a professor of anatomy. He secured the school with a well-educated staff and scientific resources. The university gave a good ground for developing medicine and exact sciences. Newly established research rooms and laboratories stimulated growth of these sciences. The professors became real maestros for their students and inspired many graduates to take over the professorial chairs, which assured the continuity of the school’s mission with its premises to develop sciences, educate, and promote knowledge.
