Abstract:

The concept of mastery, which is also linked to authority, is of utmost importance for the continuity of disciplines in science. Each discipline is legitimized not just by the conceptual network and research methodology catalogue but above all by the names of key researchers and creators whose contributions advance that particular scientific field. The same principle applies to the Gdansk pedagogy community. Its masters come from two generations of professors who build foundations for the pedagogical studies during difficult times of Polish Peoples’ Republic as the discipline began in Gdansk after 1945. Similarly to other academic fields the masters of pedagogy were appreciated for their wisdom coupled with knowledge, brave heartedness, integrity of character, hard-working, well-meaning, openness to colleagues with opposing academic or political views. Due to those features they became role models for their disciples and reference for other modern educators. Numerous symposia dedicated to the masters’ anniversaries prove how up-to-date and universal their work is while they are still amongst us. Those who had passed away speak to their students and younger researchers through texts and other creations.
