Abstract:

The text describes a uniqe institution of direct democracy- Landsgemeinde. People’s assembly, how it should be translated, is the main method of ruling in two swiss cantons- Glarus and Appenzell Innerrhoden. Its uniqueness lies in a similarity to the ancient Athen’s assemblies and also in the fact that despite the passage of time Landsgemeinde is still effective and still in use. The essey consists of three elements. The first briefly describes the origins of people’s assembly and its development during the ages. Second, describes the procedure, functioning and permissions of this institution. The last one is a brief summary and short prognosis for the future. All elaboration gives the reader orientation about functioning of Landsgemeinde and chances an problems connected with it.
