Realisation of the purposes of the European Union is possible through persistent realization of freedoms on the internal market. One of the fundamental freedoms is the freedom of business activity, which enables all EU entities to exercise economic freedoms within the territory of all the Member States. Freedom of business activity, similarly to other freedoms, is protected by law, but the protection is not absolute. This article aims to present the limitations of the freedom of business activity which are justifiable by the protection of the general interest. The benchmark for the realization of the general interest is the purpose of the European Union, which, widely defined, covers not only the economic sphere, but also the values related to social principles.
