Abstract:

The article addresses the idea of liberty according to the doctrine of the Catholic Church. It presents the traditional approach of the magisterium to the question of liberty shaped by the Church’s Fathers and Doctors. The evolution of the social teaching of the Church influenced by the cultural changes that have taken place in the contemporary world has led to the shift in the position regarding the issue discussed. The Second Vatican Council marks a turning point. It modified – in the spirit of aggiornamento – the approach to the question of liberty, in particular with regard to religious freedom and relations between Catholics and observers of other religions, as well as persons who do not espouse any religious beliefs
