Title:

School. The Social Role of Heterotopia

Subject and Keywords:

heterotopia   place   space   Sacrum   Profanum   myth

Abstract:

The aim of the text is a reflection over the social role of school in the context of the heterotopical nature of an institution. The theoretical frame is placed inside the concept of heterotopia as formulated by Michel Foucault. What becomes of particular importance for the conducted analysis is the category of school space as a primary location that is not completely desacralized. School emerges as a kind of anti-place, heterotopia, realistically performed utopia, a place where by noticing all of the relations present within our culture we find them suspended, reversed, gaining the form of the mirror-like reflection. The social role of the school heterotopia is therefore located within the function of compensation resulting from the creation of an illusion of the world that is ideal in its predictability and order. Also, gaining the meaning is the other function which I find in the sphere of myth – sacrum, which for the contemporary society is the category of success.
