Abstract:

The present paper addresses the issue of the preservation of traditions of persons of Ukrainian descent residing in Canada. The author emphasises the role of the family in preserving the culture and traditions of the home country. Mothers are very important in this context. They are presented as being the guardians of the hearth and as persons responsible for nurturing the children’s love for Ukrainian national values. The meaningfulness of the home is also underlined. The home is the first school and it has significant influence on the values that children shall embrace in their lives. The author discusses positive and negative traits of persons of Ukrainian descent while noting that residingfor a prolonged period of time in a different country and a failure to take sufficient care to nurture one’s national identity leads to the weakening of positive traits and to the highlighting and intensifying of negative ones.  

Niniejszy artykuł porusza potrzebę podtrzymywania tradycji wśród ludzi pochodzenia ukraińskiego, którzy zamieszkują Kanadę. Autor zwraca szczególną uwagę na rolę, jaką we wspieraniu kultury i zwyczajów kraju pochodzenia, odgrywa rodzina. W tej kwestii istotny udział ma matka, która jest przedstawiana jako: strażniczka domowego ogniska, osoba mająca za zadanie pielęgnowanie miłości u dzieci do ukraińskich wartości narodowych. Podkreślono również znaczenie domu, który jest pierwsząszkołą dla dziecka i ma znaczący wpływ na to, jakimi wartościami będzie się ono kierować w dalszym życiu. Autor przytacza cechy pozytywne i negatywne osób pochodzenia ukraińskiego, zwracając przy tym uwagę na fakt, że zamieszkiwanie przez dłuższy czas w innym kraju i nienależyte pielęgnowanie swojej narodowej tożsamości, sprawia, że pozytywne cechy zanikają, negatywne zaś coraz bardziej uwypuklają się i intensyfikują.
