Abstract:

Cultural diversity is a factor significantly stratifying family functioning within its own framework as well as beyond it, particularly in the social dimension. In consequence, such diversity generates a family’s specific cultural system, conceptualized by the, so called, cultural canon inherited through intergenerational transmission. It entails crucial elements, for instance the range of such transmission, the cultural type of the family, areas of experiencing cultural diversity and styles of managing diversity in the cultural borderland, determined by such factors as historical context and time. They, in turn, together contribute to the establishment of the strategy for dealing with such diversity and cultural dualism. The latter is generationally differentiated as it evolves from a cultural consensus towards intercultural orientation. Thus a, specific axiology of the cultural borderland constitutes its foundation. Hence, such a strategy can be perceived as a social capital both with reference to culturally diverse individuals as well as culturally diverse communities functioning within the framework of a multicultural society.
