Abstract:

Having siblings can be perceived both as a protective factor and a factor hindering the development of socio-emotional competencies of children starting school. It can protect against internalizing behaviours and favour externalizing behaviours. The research also highlighted gender differences. With regard to the girls, the number of siblings was important for the skills related to cognitive behaviour control, i.e., inhibition, and positive social adaptation. In boys, the greatest variation occurred in terms of prosocial behaviour.
