Abstract:

The subject of the article is to present the concept of Eric Voegelin indicating the genesis of totalitarian movements in Christianity. Attempts were made to answer the question whether gnosis, perceived by the American researcher as the source of the poli tical crisis of modernity, is only its distortion or a natural consequence of the Christian world view. To this end, consideration of the analysis of the basic philosophy of Voegelin, headed by the notion of the leap in existence, and the descriptions that constituted Christianity, as well as the set of symbols that is descriptive of this religion. It showed that Voegelin treated Christianity itself as a source of distortions towards Gnostic thinking, resulting in the emergence of totalitarianisms, and thi s results from his fullest openness to transcendence, which leads to the forgetting of the laws of the temporal world
