Abstract:

Although democratic ideas were present in Chinese intellectual discourse since at least second half of nineteenth century, times of New Culture Movement (Xinwenhua Yudong) and Fourth May Movement are period of special importance in history of their reception in China. The purpose of this article is to present context in which reception of democratic ideas by Chinese intellectuals during New Culture Movement and May Fourth Movement took place, show how they understood and used term „democracy” and attempt to judge importance of this episode in history of Chinese political thought.
