Abstract:

The article deals with adoption of the first Polish Constitution of 1791, which was the second valid constitution in Europe. There will soon be the 220th anniversary of its adoption. The au-thor briefly describes the main events and the political atmosphere of the time leading to the adoption of the Constitution. He also analyses the 11 articles that the document comprised. The basic contents, peculiarities of the Constitution, its estimation and historical significance are ana-lysed in Ukrainian literature for the first time.
