Abstract:

During the rule of Han dynasty in China Confucianism for the first time gained position of the official state ideology. This change had large impact on both Chinese history and development of Confucianism. Tu Wei-minng, contemporary philosopher and member of the third generation of New Confucianism, recognizes importance of this change. He considers this as a result of long process. In his opinion Confucianism widespread in Han dynasty court was no longer Confucianism of Confucius and Mencius. At the same time Tu Wei-ming acknowledges many Confucian intellectuals of this period. He recognizes also Confucian influence on imperial state. The purpose of this article is to describe his views on Han dynasty Confucianism, put them in the context of his interpretation of Confucianism as well as in the light of other analyses of this period in history of Confucianism.
