Abstract:

The subject of this article is crticism of confucianism by two eightheen century Japanese scholars Kamu no Mambuchi (1697-1769) and Motoori Norinaga (1730-1801). Confucianism played very important role in intellectual life of the Tokugawa Japan. Both scholars are considered members of kokugaku (national learning) school. Both were also staunch critics of confucianism. Kamu no Mabuchi wrote essay Reflections on meaning of our country (Kokuikō), while Motoori Norinaga criticized Confucianism in many of his works. While some of their arguments were similar, there were also significant differences. The purpose of this article is to present, analyse and compare arguments of both scholars.
