Alternative title:

Declaration on Universal Brotherhood against the background of the post-conciliar Christian dialogue with Islam

Abstract:

The author in the presented text discusses the Document on Universal Brotherhood, which was signed in Abu Dhabi in 2019 by the Great Imam Al. Tayyeb and Pope Francis, taking into account the history of Christian dialogue with Islam after the Second Vatican Council. The first part of the text discusses the relationship between the two religions before the Council, with particular reference to the instruction De motione oecumenica on contacts with non-Catholics, issued during the pontificate of Pius XII. Next, the author focuses on the Council's documents on Islam, discusses their main assumptions and criticises selected authors. The following part of the text discusses the issue of the attitude towards Islam of Pope John Paul II and Benedict XVI, preceding the pontificate of Pope Francis. In the final part of the text, the author focuses on the text of the Declaration and discusses the reactions and accusations that individual commentators make against it.
