Roman Senate and Freedom of Speech

Subject and Keywords:

Roman Senate   Defamation   Freedom of Speech

Abstract:

The article focuses on the issue of freedom of speech in the context of the Roman Senate’s activity during classical period. This brief study takes into consideration the role of Senate in relation to regulations on written defamation, with special regard to senatus consulta concerning anonymous and pseudonymous writings dated to first years of the Christian Era. Some attention is also given to gradual depreciation of the republican freedom of speech during Principate and a possible influence of political circumstances on the regulation of honour of Roman citizens. It is also claimed that an informal division for official (institutional) and unofficial public debate was created, with different approach towards freedom of speech and defamation within each of these types of discussion.
