Abstract:

The presented article is an attempt to compare feudal estate assemblies of Royal Prussia and Silesia. Both those territories were borderlines, so it ought to be interesting to compare their assemblies with similar institutions in the countries, they were part of, as well as between themselves. The result of the comparatist analysis of Prussian and Silesian assemblies shows that it is hard to see any similarities between them, the differences are dominant. However, a few conclusions that are visible because of this comparison are worth emphasizing. The first one is, both those territories seem to not have any unusual features, distinctive from other neighboring territories. Their borderline character was not conspicuous enough to separate them from one another. The main similarity between both assemblies was the participation of representatives of towns. It was an exceptional situation for Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, but normal in the countries of the Crown of Bohemia and German territories. The majority of similarities were to be seen at the beginning of the assembly’s existence. The way to create them was analogous, and their status until half of the 16th century also was parallel. Even their participation in nationwide assemblies was similarly organized, they were represented by some kind of deputations. Thirdly, the most important feature of both those assemblies was preservation until half of 18 century the rules of membership, structure, and functioning of an assembly from the period of estate monarchy. Feudal estate assemblies in Royal Prussia and Silesia prove to be resilient to political and socio-economical changes developed in Europe during the given period.
