Abstract:

During his lifetime, Syrus was known primarily for his mimes which were very successful in the provincial cities of Italy. However, he enters the pantheon of Latin writers with one small book in his hand. It is an alphabetical collection of sentences known as Publilii Sententiae. “Publilius Syrus, moral maxims – sententiae” is a translation of these sentences. This translation is accompanied by an introduction presenting the life of Publilius Syrus and his literary achievements. An analysis of sentences regarding such moral questions as avarice and benevolence was also carried out. In the Publilius collection we find sentences regarding law in general and the profession of the judge.  

Publiliusz Syrus za życia słynął przede wszystkim z mimów, które odnosiły wielkie sukcesy w prowincjonalnych miastach Italii. Do panteonu łacińskich pisarzy wszedł jednak z jedną niewielką książką w ręku. Jest nią alfabetyczny zbiór sentencji znany jako Publilii Sententiae. „Publilius Syrus, maksymy moralne – sententiae” stanowi przekład owych sentencji. Przekład ten został opatrzony wprowadzeniem przedstawiającym koleje życia Publiliusa Syrusa oraz jego dokonania literackie. Dokonano także analizy sentencji dotykających takich aspektów moralnych jak np. skąpstwo czy dobrodziejstwo. Odnajdujemy u Publiliusza sentencje traktujące o prawie w ogólności, a także o zawodzie sędziego.
