The Order of Immaculate Conception of Our Lady as Władysław IV Vasa's plan for confessionalization of the power elite

Abstract:

Paradigm of confessionalization is based on assumption that tendencies to unify religion after reformation are an example of modernization process. In this paper we will try to examine Władysław IV's plans as form of confessionalization. Pope Urban VIII asked Sigismund III Vasa to found one in Poland, but in was Władysław IV who took the Pope's idea. It was in fact impossible for a non-Catholic to be members of this order without conflict with his own faith. In King's project were involved Jerzy Ossoliński and Albrycht Stanisław Radziwiłł ‒ both known for their support of Counter-reformation and anti-Protestant views
