Citizenship in Cyprus and the problem of nationality of the inhabitants of so-called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus

Subject and Keywords:

Description:

Abstract:

The many years of conflicts and tensions between the Greek and Turkish Cypriots communities, and in the end the Turkish invasion of 1974, led to the actual division of Cyprus into two ethnically different parts. Creation of the internationally unrecognized so-called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus caused a serious problem of determining the nationality of its inhabitants. The law in force in the Republic of Cyprus did not deprive the Turkish Cypriots of Cypriot citizenship nor prevent them directly from obtaining it. However, the demographic changes, the still unresolved international dispute and the policy of the Cypriot authorities have meant that in certain situations the acquisition of Cypriot citizenship by Turkish Cypriots is significantly impeded or even impossible
