The traditional teaching of classical Indian dances is a fascinating cultural phenomenon. In my considerations I explain what the term classical Indian dance stands for and what is its history. I describe the ancient teaching model of the temple dance dasijattam and the particular relationship between the disciple and the teacher in the Gurukula system. It is crucial to emphasise the oral tradition and the method of knowledge transfer. I wonder if this teaching model might be applied in the modern world, what are its advantages and disadvantages and if foreign dancers might follow this kind of path
