Abstract:

The aim of this article is the analysis, how History of the Mongols of Giovanni da Pian del Carpine and Description of the World by Marco Polo influenced on the perception of the Mongolian civilization in the 13th century Europe. At the beginning of the elaboration there is a geographical horizon of the Europeans at the beginning of the 13th century and the influence of the Mongolian invasion on their perception of the Far East peoples presented. Next it is shown, how the emissary of the Pope Innocent IV, monk Giovanni da Pian del Carpine, depicted Mongols in his work, demythologising them and making them just normal people, who can be defeated in a fight. Subsequently Marco Polo provided the Europeans with description of a vision of an astonishing Mongolian empire of Kublai Khan. Then the article follows the steps of changing perception of Mongols in the 13th century Europe, starting from the mythical people sent as a penalty for sins to an efficiently managed empire governed by smart rulers
