TY - GEN A1 - Sekunda, Nicolas Victor N2 - The first description in Greek history of a military train resupplying an army in the field comes during Herodotus’ description of the Battle of Plataea. The capacity and the cost of resupplying the Greek army is calculated, and the influence these costs might have had on Greek strategical planning for the defence of Greece in 480 are assessed. The Persian invaders had similar logistical constraints on their operational performance, which led them to request ‘earth and water’ as symbols of the willingness of object states to provide logistical support to Persian forces passing through their territory.
