The purpose of the conflict was to undermine the key role of China in the so-called the tributary system. The main thesis of the article oscillates around the belief that although Japan was ultimately defeated in this war, its longterm effects were quite favorable for Japan. By contrast, China, although it won the war, lost its leading role in the region.
