He composed highly original short poems, of which only thirteen survived. They are hymns, fables, ecphrases and epigrams, written in different lyric metres (mostly in paroemiacs and apokrota), and three of them are preserved with musical notation. Mesomedes’ style is simple, though there are some intriguing catachreses in his poems. There are also some allusions both to Hadrian and to various mysteries, mentioned in a laconic, evocative manner.
