Judicial functions are performed by justices of the peace (lay magistrates) and also by a jury. This paper is devoted to the lay participation in the adjudication in English and Welsh law. The article presents the justices of the peace institution as well as the jury – the historical aspects, the status of the bodies, its judicial competences and also the outline of Crown Court proceedings.
