He devoted most of his life to study. He is often considered forerunner of later intellectual trends in Chinese intellectual life- Han learning and evidential learning (kaozheng). Statecraft was main, although by no means only, area of interest and research. He criticized contemporary system of government. He supported changes in local administration as well as in taxation system and recruitment of officials.
