 abstract={The paper analyses the role of the state in the market economy, with particular focus on the state’s constitutional obligations to support the economy, as apart of exercising the broadly defined economic freedom. In the context of the prohibition resulting from Article 107 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, which includes the prohibition of any financial support to entrepreneurs that may constitute public aid, the paper aims to present those categories of aid that are provided by the state not only in performance of its basic functions, but which also support the fulfilment of the purposes of the Community. The support category includes in particular aid granted to assist the development of regions with particularly low life quality or with significant unemployment. It also applies to aid for the purpose of supporting important projects that are in the common European interest.},
