This brief study takes into consideration the role of Senate in relation to regulations on written defamation, with special regard to senatus consulta concerning anonymous and pseudonymous writings dated to first years of the Christian Era. Some attention is also given to gradual depreciation of the republican freedom of speech during Principate and a possible influence of political circumstances on the regulation of honour of Roman citizens.
