Léa Polverini observes a parallel between the Algerian worker in Paris in the 1950s and the barbarian. As the latter is placed outside the walls of the civilised world, he follows a different mode of existence and a rhythm from those of the inhabitants of the city. Hence, the impossibility, for Algerian immigrants, to take part in daily life that allows routine and carelessness. On the other hand, their daily experience is marked by the racist rumour which deprives them of any complexity or ambiguity. In accordance with the Orientalist cliché, they are only “Arabs.” Escaping all ritualisation, the immigrants maintain a special relationship with nature, the rhythm of which structures their daily lives. Even their garden is a “barbaric” space that challenges the idea of the Western garden, whose role is to domesticate nature in order to recognize civilisation. Yalann Waldik, the main protagonist and narrator of the novel, tries to translate the daily miseries of his companions and compatriots to put them in a book. This project, however, fails due to Waldik’s excessive idealism and his belief in the possibility of saving the contemporary barbarians.
