It begins in chapter 1 with scientific definitions of social movements and social movement theories. It shows how the theories may be useful in defining objectives and strategies of the movements and in identification of effective mechanisms of mobilisation. Chapter 2 is devoted to movements’ impact on the society. It presents phases of movement activities, but above all it focuses on forms and repertoires of their operations from street expressions to political and legal activities to acts of boycott. It also explores a case study of the movement of the rights of men and boys. Chapters 3, 4 and 5 refer to legal conditions of movements’ operations in Poland, starting with mechanisms of state support for movements in the context of subsidiarity, e.g. through financial and organisational support or symbolic acts. Special attention was paid to the role of the Ombudsman. The next chapter focuses on the organisational development and related legal regulations. It explores legal forms and types of operations of third-sector organisations, as well and intersectoral cooperation and available tools of this cooperation, including social consultations and advisory bodies. Meanwhile, chapter 5 presents legal limitations and repressions against social movement operations. It explores the constitution and legal acts, as well as discusses the role of police as an institution which limits, but also assists social movements. It refers to the category of civil disobedience. Chapter 6 focuses on the special area of functioning of social movement organisations, exploring their funding mechanisms. It describes public and private, national and international sources. It pays special attention to legal regulations of money collecting. Chapter 7, in turn, analyses associations between social movements and the political sphere, indicating the major mechanisms of influence on policies and legal regulations available for social movements. It presents legal and practical characteristics of legislative initiative, social consultations, as well as public hearings, as well as relations between movements and politics. The two final chapters address questions of marketing and communication. Chapter 8 explores possibilities and tools of building social movement brand, as well as benefits of this strategy and actors involved.
