Schmitt saw it as the main slogan of liberal democracy, of which he was a staunch opponent, while Peterson fought against the legacy of Hellenizing Judaism. The distinction between ruler and government had been developed by theologians and philosophers since antiquity, and it allowed a number of powers to be taken away from the ruler in favor of his administration.
