  The article submits two texts to analysis: Derriere les vieux murs en ruines [Outiside the Old Ruined Walls] (1922) by Aline Réveillaud de Lens and Femmes d’Alger dans leur appartement [Women of Algier in Their Apartment] (1982) by Assia Djebar. A comparison of these colonial and postcolonial era texts makes it possible to identify the constant elements of the daily life of the Maghrebian woman and to draw conclusions from them on her past and present condition. The analysis reveals that this daily life is characterised first and foremost by the “double colonisation” of the Maghrebian woman, oppressed by the patriarchy of traditional society and by the colonial power. The analysed texts provide two solutions to this situation: either acceptance of one’s fate and solidarity between women, or awareness of one’s condition and solitary revolt. Moreover, what brings so-called colonial text and the postcolonial text closer together is the empathy of the two writers for their protagonists.
