In this article I attempt to reconstruct some of the methods of oral transmission and composition of the Buddha’s Words. The analysis is based on the Mah¯aparinibbana Sutta, C¯ul.agosi˙nga Sutta,Mah¯agosi˙nga Sutta, Ca˙nk¯i Sutta, Sa˙ng¯iti Sutta and Vinaya. This paper mentions the socio-cultural background of India. I depict the methods of teaching the Veda, which have been handed down by wordof mouth, without being transcribed on paper. It also explains some very important notions relevant to the topic, such as: sutta, Buddhavacana, formula, stadardised phrases, repetition etc. I analyze thesignificance of the direct transmission of the Buddha’s teaching from master to pupil with the teaching methods of the 12-step learning process. I have emphasized the important role of joint recitation in thepreserved words of the Buddha. The article also explores the conflict which arises among scholars. The Buddhist religious specialists have focused on debates between scholars following the improvisationalmethods of oral transmission and word for word accuracy in the recitation of the Buddha’s words.
