The Polish socio-economic discourse seems to be the prevailing belief that completion of higher education is a main condition of satisfactory employment. The value of university education in itself, and the consequences, which may result in it for the development of the young man, are often overlooked. The purpose of this paper is an attempt to respond to criticism of the current system of the Polish higher education. The author responded to the most common criticisms describing the current functioning of the sector. Then analyzed the Polish legislation regulating the functioning of the higher education sector and finds in them the references to postulates of neoliberal ideology. The culmination of this study are the critical reflections on the condition of Polish higher education, combined with – perhaps utopian – proposals directions of changes.
