Wydział Prawa, Administracji i Ekonomii Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego N2 - This article examines the most important issues concerning Jan Herburt, a lawyer living at the time of the Democracy of Nobles, as well as his work entitled Statutes and privileges of the Polish Crown, translated from the Latin into the Polish, collected anew. During the Democracy of Nobles a need to edit sets of laws was observed in the 16th century. Jan Harburt’s work is a source of law which has some features of early modern codification. Despite greater competence of the Sejm, the legislative position of the Parliament seems to decrease, which results in the fact that it is private individuals who publish sets of laws instead of the state. Herburt’s work was used in circuit courts until the 18th century. The author also had considerable parliamentary experience and his printed set of laws contributed to the development of legal awareness among the society at that time.
